My Words — Making is Connecting

My Words
Script
In David Gauntlett’s book Making is Connecting, he refers out to another writer… craftsman… furniture maker… Peter Korn. Korn states that he was able to clarify his goals when he “realized that the words used to describe aesthetic goals… also described the person [he] sought to grow into.” Gauntlett suggests that “it might be a good exercise for each of us to write down the three words we aspire towards in our creative work, and to see if it aligns with our life, and a sense of identity.” What follows is my execution of such an exercise.

Sunlight. I must resist the temptation of turning it into an adjective. It is a force. I want all of sunlight’s descriptors. Sunlight is vulnerable; it’s exposed. But it’s the best disinfectant. This amount of reveal, the associated openness, and straightforwardness demand courage. The light, bright part of the yin yang represents the masculine yang. The masculine yang is expressive, active, productive. It moves.

Intrinsic. Here’s our adjective. This gives a little bit more of the feminine. For a long time, I have identified authenticity as my motivating value. Authentic to me is attunement with my inner self and honesty with oneself. I can claim to be honest, but not truthful. It’s about placing that inner child center, honoring her. Are you familiar with the word acedia? It is sketched on my heart to mean the sin of not listening to your soul. I am particularly avoidant of that sin. I want to esteem the depths within me. It’s taking what’s intrinsic and making it intentional. It comes from within, intrinsically, but it reverberates and…

Inspires. A verb. I wish for my work to end with hope. I want to maintain a hopeful disposition; I want to promote a hopeful disposition. There should be a sense of immediacy that infuses the viewer, reader, or listener with the knowledge that the present is important. I like bringing out the good but also inspiring (thought)... aspiring to be better... I like the verb inspires to describe the action I am engaging in with my creativity; she is inspired as she inspires; she passes along vision… because where there is no vision, the people perish.

She aims to be sunlight. She respects what is intrinsic. She inspires.
